Responsible for coordinating the placement of students in an educational environment most conducive to their educational needs. Coordinate all testing and counseling activities with the unit principal in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.
Review detailed background file, conduct personal interview and test as necessary to analyze and recommend a program for each assigned offender; refer offenders to other program areas as appropriate.
Maintain the appropriate number of students per class by identifying and placing students in appropriate programs.
Maintains status as General Educational Diploma (GED) examiner at all levels: Texas Education Agency (TEA) and General Educational Diploma Testing Service (GEDTS).
Coordinates unit-testing program for GED and TEA.
Coordinate all counseling activities with the unit principal.
Provide small groups, large groups, as well as classroom Guidance and Counseling on unit.
Conduct continuous interpretation and evaluation of progress in offender’s specific development program.
Utilize new concepts and approaches; recommend and conduct training sessions and conferences to develop greater proficiency among staff in the area of guidance and social adjustment.
Utilize and establish community linkages and resources as needed.
Assist in the evaluation of facility services for offenders, and recommend modifications for improvement.
Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
Maintain accountability of staff, offenders and property; adhere to safety practices.It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:Master’s Degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) is required and State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) Professional School Counselor Certificate or be eligible for an Emergency Permit. To be eligible for an Emergency Permit the following requirements must be metA valid Texas SBEC teacher certificate at the level of assignmenTwenty-four (24) semester hours of graduate-level credit, including twelve (12) semester hours in guidance and counseling; and Three (3) years classroom teaching experience PreK-12.
Valid driver’s license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
Post Hire Requirements:
